What is epoxy floor coating?

Epoxy is a thick, high-build resin coating — resin plus hardener — that bonds strongly to prepared concrete and forms a durable, seamless floor at a lower up-front cost than polyaspartic. The trade-offs are a slower cure and a tendency to yellow under UV.

Epoxy built its reputation for good reason: it’s tough, it lays down thick, and it’s economical. For indoor floors with little sunlight, it’s still a perfectly good choice.

Where it struggles is exactly where Saskatchewan garages live — cold cure conditions, UV through the door, and hot tires. That’s why we often use epoxy as a high-build base coat and finish with a polyaspartic topcoat.

The honest read

Where it shines, where it doesn’t.

Strengths

  • Lower up-front material cost
  • Thick, high-build film in fewer coats
  • Strong adhesion to prepped concrete
  • Longer working time — forgiving on big pours
  • Great as a base coat under polyaspartic

Trade-offs

  • Gradual cure — plan for 3–7 days to full strength
  • Can amber under UV — sunlit areas need a UV-stable topcoat
  • Less flexible in deep cold
  • Hot-tire pickup possible without the right topcoat

Bare epoxy ambers under UV over time. For sunlit areas we use it as a base under a UV-stable polyaspartic topcoat.
